Haiti

Thursday, Jan 14, 2010

The US has its problems at the moment, as we do here in the UK, but well done for stumping up $100 million to help Haiti. £6 million from the UK Government is a good start as well.

If anyone who reads this blog is interested in donating you can view details on the bbc website here. Or you can donate direct at the Disasters Emergency Committee website here.

6th Birthday!

Friday, Mar 6, 2009

I must apologise for my lack of posts recently but I have been taking some time out recently to relax and spend quality some time with my family, do some restructuring of the business (more news on that soon!) and a dash of IT for good measure. So we are now ready for the year ahead and raring to go..........

I don't post many personal things on the blog - but thought I would share a couple of photos (taken by Andy) of my sons, Helier (on his sixth birthday) and Louis (who is three). Both are fantastic boys and really keep my wife and I on our toes.

Lots of people say Helier looks like his dad!! What a handsome chap he is.....

Land workers

Wednesday, Jan 7, 2009

I covered some amazing weddings in 2008 and we are just finishing off the post production for our last two weddings of 2008 which we will post here very shortly!

I did however manage to continue my documentary work for a few clients.

I was asked to produce a series of environmental portraits of land workers in black and white. For those of you that are interested I really went back to basics and with just one camera and a 50mm lens tried to capture the character of the person I was documenting. It is very easy I think to intimidate your subjects at times when you have loads of gear. What ends up happening is a real lack of connection between you and your subject. For this project it was important that I had minimal equipment and trusted that I was able to build a good enough relationship with my subject for them to allow me to capture who they are.

None of my subjects were directed to smile, if they were happy and wanted to smile it was up to them. The most important aspect of the images was for the subject to be looking at the camera. This allows the viewer of the final image to become more involved with the image and the land worker.

What has this got to do with wedding photography? I think it is very important that I continue documentary work outside of weddings as I know this benefits my wedding work and it also inspires me to be creative during my weddings. I hope you enjoy the images.

Success

Friday, Apr 25, 2008

I posted previously about my work in China and in particular my images from a place called Kashgar in China. The reason for the post was that I was going through my archive after I had been asked to submit a portfolio of images for a national gallery who were looking to commission a photographer to capture a series of images of people in their everyday life. I am pleased to announce that we got the commission which is great as I love doing this kind of work! I am also a strong believer that continuing my documentary projects really strengthens my wedding work and I know that my clients appreciate the other work that I do. You can see more of my documentary work HERE

Looking at my web stats recently I noticed a massive increase in web traffic to my site from the US. I am not sure why this has happened but if anyone in the US would care to let me know I would really appreciate it!

Kashgar, China

Thursday, Mar 27, 2008

Starting in 2001 I spent a few years working in China documenting some very interesting stories. One of my most memorable places to visit was a place called Kashgar in Western China. It was very shortly after the war in Afghanistan had started in late 2001 and I decided to document the daily lives of the Uyghurs of Western China. The Uyghurs are a muslim minority that live in Xinjiang Provence. It is similar to Tibet where the Uyghurs are also calling for more autonomy or even full independence away from China. I had heard that the majority of the locals were Muslim and had very traditional lives hardly touched by the wealth of Eastern China or Western influences. It was like going back in time roaming around the mud bricked houses and visiting the very chaotic sunday market where young boys would test ride horses around the market compound.

I have just been asked to submit a portfolio of images for a series of portraits of land workers that a national gallery wish to commission. I love these kind of projects so I have decided to submit some images from my Kashgar project. This set of images won me a World Press Photo in 2002 and FCC Hong Kong Photographer of the Year 2001. You can see more images from this project and a couple of others on my editorial website here. I thought some of the readers of this blog would be interested in seeing my other work. Wish me luck for the commission!!!
